Tracey Aitken is been doing general antenatal talks on Tuesdays on a regular basis. Gretha Venter joined her recently and gives an antenatal talk on a Friday. We realised that more in-depth education is necessary and in August Gretha started a Pregnancy and Birth class at the Lakeview Community Church in Retreat. The course material was developed by Living Hope in Capri, near Noordhoek.
Gretha really enjoyed getting to know the women who came to the classes. They shared many laughs and she had lots of fun teaching them the basics about what happens in your body when you are pregnant, why it is important to eat well and what substances can harm the baby. They also learned what happens during labour and birth and how to cope with pain.
Roxzanne unexpectedly gave birth at 36 weeks to a baby girl. Little Faith weighed in at 1,9kg and they spent a couple of days in hospital to make sure that she was gaining weight. She is a much loved little girl. The other babies are due in October, December and February. The next Pregnancy and Birth Class as well as a Moms and Babies group starts on 13 October.
At our Celebration Tea at the end of the 8 weeks, we asked : “How did the Pregnancy and Birth classes change your life?”
Rashieda: I have learned what to expect during labour and birth and want Gretha to be my doula when I am in labour. I really want to continue with these classes once my baby is born.
Astrid: I asked a lot of questions during the classes and I learned lots of new things. I thought this baby was mine, but I realised that a father figure is very important for a child and that it is my partner’s baby too. It makes it easier if your partner is on this journey with you.
Gillian: I am not so scared anymore. I am feeling confident that I will be able to handle the pain.
Lucinda: I have calmed down since I started coming and learned about a healthy pregnancy. I have become emotionally stronger.
Roxzanne: I want to thank everyone for their help with my baby, Faith. Not a day goes by that I don’t get something for her.
Beverly: With the information I have I can go out and tell other mothers and young girls and help them with their pregnancies.
