Our Heart for Mothers

In South Africa, women and children are suffering due to poverty and horrific health conditions. Many mothers and babies are getting sick, even dying every day.

This heartbreaking reality is often fueled by not enough food available at home, substance abuse, and limited access to vital health care. Also, poor education and knowledge about proper baby care and nutrition, compounds the pain and suffering of an already dire situation.

But this can change with your help.

At The Zoe Project, we’re committed to transforming the lives of our most vulnerable community members. This is no small task, and we need as many kind hearts and helping hands as we can get.

Together We Can Build Stronger Communities…One Mom and Baby at a Time.

Our Wholistic Approach

The Zoe Project helps moms deal with tough situations during their pregnancy, by offering counseling, information, education, and essential resources.

Our work also involves empowering women and young people, teaching them about relationships, sexual health, their rights, and how to be confident and valuable members of their communities.

Educating

In the Western Cape, about 15% of children suffer from stunting – a condition that affects a child’s growth and physical development when they’re very young. This often happens because of factors like not eating good healthy food, and or not having enough information about breastfeeding practices.

The first 1,000 days of a child’s life are crucial for their long-term growth, as nearly 90% of their brain develops by the age of five. These early years significantly shape their future as an adult.

That’s why The Zoe Project strongly focuses on the first 1,000 days of life in our antenatal, and mother-and-baby classes. We teach moms about proper feeding techniques, health, hygiene, and infant care.

Our main goal is to tackle stunting and malnutrition in our local communities, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG2), aimed at eliminating hunger in South Africa.

Empowering

Poverty and violence continue to escalate in South Africa, with women and children bearing the heaviest burden of this catastrophic social disease. Many of the women benefiting from The Zoe Project’s counseling services and programs, have been victims of horrific crime, domestic assault, and gang-related brutality.

This harsh environment not only affects their physical well-being, but also puts tremendous pressure on their mental health.

To support women in our communities, The Zoe Project offers crucial counseling services to all mothers attending pregnancy screening assessments and antenatal classes. We also have an open-door policy for young girls and women facing any other issues, offering support and guidance when they need it most.

In the past year, The Zoe Project assisted approximately 10,000 women through various programs and services, empowering women, and their families to overcome their daily challenges, while working towards building a better future.

Nurturing

A recent report from Statistics South Africa reveals, almost 35% of pregnant women faced food shortages (for five or more days) in the month before the survey – due to poverty.

To tackle this issue, The Zoe Project offers a birthing support program for moms, that includes Doula services (birthing companions), along with a feeding program at select healthcare facilities (MOUs).

Additionally, many mothers do not have money to buy essential items for their newborn babies, or for themselves after giving birth. That is why we provide much-needed supplies through Zoe Packs. These packages contain baby clothing, diapers, hygiene and sanitation items for mothers, and blankets.

Our aim is to offer love and support to pregnant women and new moms, ensuring they have the necessary resources and emotional support during and after childbirth.
